Frequently asked
What makes 2016-17 Black worth opening?
You're guaranteed at least two autographs per box, all on-card. The rookie class is stacked with Auston Matthews, Mitch Marner, and Patrik Laine all having signed cards in the base set. It's a short-print product with just 40 base cards, so the focus is tight and the hits are frequent.
Which rookies are the biggest chase cards?
Auston Matthews and Mitch Marner are the top pulls, both numbered to just /99 in the base Lustrous Rookies Signatures set. William Nylander and Patrik Laine are also key rookies at /199. All four have Black & Blue Spectrum one-of-ones that are nearly impossible to pull.
What's the difference between the Lustrous Rookies Signatures tiers?
Level 1 is /299, Level 2 is /199, and Level 3 is /99. The lower the number, the scarcer the card. Each tier also has Gold Spectrum parallels (/15 or /35) and the ultra-rare Black & Blue Spectrum (only five copies made).
How do the base card parallels work?
Base cards are limited to /299 copies. Gold Spectrum parallels are /35, and Black & Blue Spectrum cards are one-of-one. The Black & Blue versions are the real chase, but they're extremely hard to find.
What's Lustrous INK and why do collectors hunt it?
It's a veteran autograph set featuring signatures on a shining acetate surface. Cards can come with jersey or patch pieces, and there are combo and trio variations that add extra ink. It's one of the most visually striking inserts in the product.
Is Black Hole Auto Relics easy to pull?
The jersey version drops once every three packs, so it's fairly common. The jersey auto is at 1:5 ratio, making it a reasonable hit. Premium Relic and Autographed Premium Relic versions are scarcer at /15 and /10 respectively.
How does 2016-17 Black compare to the previous year?
Box prices are lower than 2015-16 because there are now five cards per pack instead of six. You still get multiple autos per box and the same focus on premium, on-card signatures. The rookie class is arguably stronger this year with Matthews and Marner.
What are the best inserts in 2016-17 Upper Deck Black?
Worth keeping an eye out for: Lustrous Rookies Signatures, Lustrous INK Autographs, Signature Rookies, Black Hole Auto Relics (1:5 packs), Fresh Gear Rookie Booklets, Pro Penmanship (1:3 packs).
When did 2016-17 Upper Deck Black come out?
It dropped December 13, 2016.
What's in a 2016-17 Upper Deck Black hobby box?
1 pack per box, 5 cards per pack, 10 boxes per case
