Frequently asked
Who's 2017 Topps High Tek for?
The deep end. People buy this chasing top rookie patch autos and legend signatures, and the price reflects it.
What makes 2017 High Tek different from regular Topps releases?
High Tek is an all-acetate product where every card features a unique background pattern. Instead of traditional base cards, you're chasing different pattern tiers. The patterns are split by player position, so infielders and DHs get 'A' designs while pitchers, catchers, and outfielders get 'B' designs.
Is Aaron Judge the key rookie in this product?
Yes. Aaron Judge's rookie card (HT-AJ) is the marquee pull and commands the highest prices in the set. He's in the 'B' pattern group as an outfielder, so his cards appear on the Pixel Circle, Chainlink Hexagons, Lightning, Spiral Dots, and Vertical Waves designs.
How many autographs come in a hobby box?
Each hobby box is guaranteed to contain 2 autographs. That's a solid hit rate for the $130 MSRP, though the autograph subjects vary.
What are the pattern tiers and how common are they?
Pattern 1 appears 7-8 times per box, Pattern 2 shows up 8-9 times, Pattern 3 about 6 times, Pattern 4 around 4 times, and Pattern 5 roughly 2 times. Patterns 6 and 7 are rare (less than one per box), and the SpecTEKular Diffractor patterns are case hits numbered /15.
What parallel versions exist beyond the base patterns?
There are Rainbow Diffractor parallels in multiple colors (Green Rainbow /99, Blue Rainbow /75) for both regular and autograph cards. Autograph cards also come in Clubhouse Image Variations with Gold Galactic Diffractor versions. A Blackout parallel also exists.
Who else is in the checklist besides Aaron Judge?
The set includes stars like Mike Trout, Bryce Harper, Clayton Kershaw, Max Scherzer, and Kris Bryant, plus legends like Hank Aaron, Ken Griffey Jr., Albert Pujols, and Derek Jeter. Cody Bellinger is featured prominently in the 'A' pattern group.
Is this product a good value at $130 MSRP?
That depends on your goal. If you're chasing Aaron Judge or specific autographs, the guaranteed 2 autos per box is solid. But since you're getting 40 cards total with many duplicates across patterns, the per-card value is lower than traditional sets. Pattern collectors and Judge hunters tend to find it worthwhile.
What are the best inserts in 2017 Topps High Tek?
Worth keeping an eye out for: SpecTEKular Diffractor (case hit), Pattern 6 (Stadium and Shatter) (less than 1 per box), Pattern 7 (Spiral Grid and Diamond X) (less than 1 per box), Clubhouse Image Variations Autographs, Rainbow Diffractor parallels.
